Artist's Statement

I use watercolor to interpret the nude human figure in a way that emphasizes mass and energy. I’ve never been motivated to draw anything that didn’t move of its on volition; it’s always been either people or animals. The figures are not portraits; they are arrangements of shapes in space held together by their own life force. I often layer figures on top of one another, combining them in ways not possible in real space to create formal relationships and tension between the figures that do not depend on narrative or psychological content. Despite the emphasis on formal relationships, my most recent work has taken on a more emotional tone. Emerging themes include sexuality and the transience of individual identity.
